September 4
Hi.
I’ve never made an announcement like this before, and it feels very awkward and shouty to do it through a computer screen, so please be nice and pretend that we’re sitting in your living room. I’ll give you a minute to get settled.
The thing is, I’ve been working on my manuscript, yes, yes, but I’ve also been working on something else. That something else has made it difficult, actually, to work on my manuscript, because it’s made me want to lie on the couch instead, eating peanut butter sandwiches and fantasizing about donuts. I know it doesn’t look like much, but it’s there, under my shirt. I’ll give you a hint. It’s a baby.

I’m 13 weeks along, and if all goes according to plan, we will meet this baby sometime around September 4. That means that we will likely be a family of three Virgos. Pray for us.
Wanting to be parents is a recent development for us. I’ve never been into babies, though I can already tell that my own baby will be a very different story. But what I’m most excited about is getting to know the person that we made. I’m excited about introducing this person to chocolate malts, and pizza, and Bruce Springsteen. I’m excited to read When the Sky Is Like Lace with this person, the way my dad read it with me. I’m excited about getting to know Brandon as a parent. I’m excited about getting to know myself as a parent. I’m ready, and I’m not at all ready, but more than anything, I just feel lucky to get to have this experience.
For the past couple of months, whenever I’ve been out and about, driving or sitting at a stoplight, I catch myself staring at people on the street, and sometimes even at their pets, thinking, "Hey, that guy with the facial tattoo was once a baby! That nice-looking older gentleman has a mother, and she gave birth to him! That dog was once an embryo! That woman in the pant suit used to be inside another woman’s uterus!" Pregnancy has turned me into Jack Handey, and I’ve hardly even started yet.
Here we go.

In my experience that sensation of everyone once being someone's little baby, only intensifies as things progress. My little girl is 2 and I still do it *all* the time. Congrats, this is fabulous new.
brandin told me yesterday after you guys had dinner at la bete! congrats. I also was not a baby person, or i didn't think i was, but i am getting the itch too. you are going to be the CUTEST little pregnant lady. woo hoo!!
How awesome! Congratulations!!
welcome. life as a mama has taught me so much. i have been apart from my twins for a full week now, another three days to go before they come back home. and i am not as complete a 'me' without them. best thing i (we) have ever done.
Congrads!!
Congratulations! Your reasons are precisely why I want kids now as well.
A million congratulations, well wishes (and crossed fingers at the thought of three Virgos. Oh my.) to you!
It's such a singular experience. Enjoy this first part, barfs and all, because it just gets crazier from here. Congratulations to you both!

Congratulations, from a new reader! The phenomenon of seeing everyone's inherent baby-ness hasn't stopped for me yet.
Congratulations! I'm excited to see what interesting food combinations you come up with :)
Fantastic news, congratulations!!
Oh that's fantastic and I just adore how you chose to tell us! My two babies are now teenagers and I frequently look at them in all their teen angst and glory and remember that they too were babies and that I used to change their diapers and speak to them in soothing, happy tones while reading them books that only had happy endings. Time flies...
Enjoy your pregnancy and rest up for parenthood! May your baby grow up to love food as much as mine do :-)
Congratulations! I am 21 weeks along with our first, and can totally relate to the wonder. We had just had our first ultrasound, and went out to dinner to celebrate (and probably because I was famished). We were sitting at our table and it was like my eyes were open for the first time. "K." I exclaimed, reaching for his arm, "Do you realize every single person in here used to be a baby?" He nodded, clearly not moved like I was. But he wasn't growing a baby either, so I understand.
Thanks for sharing the joy!
I'm verklempt and I don't even know you! Except that I feel like I do through your book and your blog. Congratulations to the two of you and welcome to the amazing world of parenthood.
Oh, congratulations! Having a baby is the most incredible experience and I wish you the very best :-)
Oooh! How exciting!!! wishing you an easy and healthy pregnancy!
Congratulations! It truly is the most amazing thing to meet and get to know that peanut who has lived inside of you for what seems like forever! And now that mine are six and three it still seems like they were babies a couple of minutes ago with sweet milky breath and soft hairs and lovely little recessed chins. Enjoy your pregnancy, and all the time on the couch you need.
congrats! yay for all those things to teach your baby. i love it.
WOOHOO! That's great news! Congrats~
Congratulations Molly and Brandon! Such wonderful news :-) I wonder whose palate the baby will have....
Ohmyword I AM SO HAPPY FOR YOU GUYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congratulations! my baby girl is now 34 years old, and still the most important experience of my life, and the best thing I ever did.
It all goes by very fast; amazing!
Wishing you and Brandon and the baby-to-be all the best!
congratulations! being a mom of two i can totally understand what you are going through. enjoy the moment and take good rest (god knows you aren't going to get any after sep :))
It's incredible, the amount of love that comes from becoming a parent. Love for your child, love for your husband, and love for yourself. So very happy for you.
Yippee! Super congratulations. I love what you said about getting to know Brandon as a parent, it is so wonderful. I'm four and a half years into this parenting gig and I'm still stunned that I created this person. So so happy for three!
Congratulations on the baby, and also (selfishly) thanks for reminding me about When the Sky Was Like Lace.
This is SUCH wonderful news!! Congratulations!! May I suggest a name from the captcha below: Anfur? Tiorkf? Both have a certain je ne sais quois... :)
Congratulations! I couldn't be happier for you and Brandon. I have no doubt that you two will be fantastic parents!
Brilliant. Just brilliant. I dare say, your writing is going to change as much as the rest of your life. That will be a pleasure for us to witness - the same as you witness your child.
it is a big deal! congrats from the bottom of my heart!
OH MY GOODNESS! Congratulations! Though I don't actually know you and Brandon, except through this blog and your book, I feel quite confident that you're going to be wonderful parents. And we all know your child will eat well. (:
SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!
Congratulations Molly!
CONGRATULATIONS!!! It's all so exciting, this new direction that your life is taking. Enjoy every minute of motherhood.
Congratulations! Its even crazier when you get to look your baby in the face and realize he used to live inside of you. Very exciting!
Wonderful! Congratulations!
Congrats to all three. You guys will be fabulous.

Oh, gosh. I am so happy and excited for you, Brandon, and the baby. The baby is going to have two foodie parents who cook really well.
Oh, Molly!!! I'm SOOOOO happy for you!!! :) You are so lovely and kind and I just know that you're going to be the most amazing mother :) I've always adored you and your writing and just want to say that I'm just so happy for you and everything to come :) Congratulations!! Lots and lots of love, dear :)
Awwww congratulations! That was the best "announcement" post ever :) I could talk this stuff for hours on end. Perhaps because I've been a labor and delivery nurse for 12 years... and I am still amazed at what women's bodies can do. Produce a human? Sure. Bam. Done.
Congratulations Molly! This is so exciting!
Simply, absolutely, spectacularly wonderful.
Molly! You are so cute!!! I just adored your book and of course I love your blog.
Your passion is going to make you a wonderful mum!
Giant Congrats!,,,,.
congrats! september will be a lovely time to have a little one! I have been trying to guess based on your blog titles for awhile now when you'd announce you were pregnant. If you go back and look you might see why I might have guessed any number of them was an announcement... ;) Enjoy those Jack Handey moments, they are so profound after all!
Molly! What fantastic news. Congratulations again and again!
Here I was, heading to your post with huge amounts of excitement and anticipation, sure that you would be sharing more details about your book....and THIS news! SO very happy for you and Brandon! It truly is the most blissful, crazy experience in the world to be a parent-nothing could be better. I am sure you'll be a wonderful mother, and I'll bet your dad is looking down and beaming happily :)
Molly, how exciting! I am also pregnant at the moment - 16 weeks - and I can relate to much of what you're saying, especially the coming to terms with it bit!
Hopefully you have been feeling ok over the last week while, and that you will start feeling a bit more human soon - albeit with an inflating beachball shoved up your jumper :-)
Yay!
Wendy
Ahhh yes all my favorite bloggers (haha, you and Luisa) are having babies this is so exciting!!! Congratulations Molly!
PS: Loved the part about introducing Bruce Springsteen. ;) That lucky baby is going to have an awesome experience with food and music!
Congratulations! What happy news :) My mother said that when she was young, she was scared about having a baby because she didn't like kids and thought everyone else's child was ugly. Then she had her first, and she said her mind was changed instantly. Wishing you health and joy on this journey!
Congratulations Molly - so happy for you and Brandon! You will be a marvelous mama. :)
It's an adventure you'll never regret. So, SO excited for you.
thanks for sharing and congratulations!
from another someone who has never left a comment on your blog but always reads it.
and i don't have children but i understand what you're saying and wish you 3 the best. yay!
I have been waiting and hoping for this post-- is that weird? Babies in general are ok, but your OWN baby is a biteable, joyous wonder. This will rock your world in the best way possible.
-loyal reader and Spilled Milk listener, Kirsten
I think this is probably the first time I have commented, though I have read your site for years and sat across a table from you and enjoyed chatting with you on numerous occasions. I am thrilled for you and Brandon and I wish you all the very best.
Weird... I was just thinking the other day (who knows why) that I had a feeling this was something that you were going to announce soon. so congrats... It's a wonderful journey and now doubt you will both be great parents. Enjoy it all and I look forward to following it with you (which is a bit weird but hey, that's the world we now roll in). x

Oh! Congratulations! Such exciting news.
Many many congratulations! Your baby is terribly lucky to have two such creative and wonderful parents. Hope that the months to come are even lovelier than you've imagined and to hear from you again soon!
Congratulations! Hopefully you will continue to share your insights on pregnancy and parenting along the way. If they are anything along the line of Jack Handey, as you suggest, I am sure they will entertaining.
Congratulations!!
That's wonderful! September...a great month for starting something new. Congratulations.
Congratulations!
This is terrific news, so happy for you and yes, the Jack Handey phase well, I'm nearly four years in and it hasn't ended yet...
oh, congratulations! how exciting!
Congratulations!!! Getting to know that baby as a person will take you on an amazing journey. One of my favorite things about my kids is how they notice the tiniest details of things I've forgotten about, or not noticed. I think you still notice more than most people, but am sure you'll still enjoy their help.
:)
Congratulations! I felt the same way about babies - not interested in too many of them beyond my own. And I still look at people and think, "I wonder what s/he was like as a crazy toddler?"
Motherhood is, without a doubt, both the hardest and best thing I've ever taken on. I look forward to your future thoughts on it and your little one's food adventures.
Wow congratulations! 10 year olds are always what get me about the whole baby thing. You mean my little guy will be that big, that independent and sure of himself? How is that going to happen? All the best to you guys!
So excited for you - congratulations on your new adventure!
Congratulations! That is amazing news, Molly! I wish you and Brandon all the best. xo
So excited for you!
Congratulations to you and Brandon! And many best wishes for the future!
CONGRATS!!! I am reading your Blog for years now and ever since I read your Book (which I preordered on amazon.de btw.. ;-)) I was thinking about "when will they get babies? It seems they match so perfectly - they need to be parents and give their soul to them!" And here we go!!!
I wish you all the best!
Having a child is a blessing and you will enjoy it!!
Chris
big hug to you both. What a step to take :) I hope you're well and the hormones are kind on you.
Woohoo!!! Congratulations! Welcome to a new world ;-)
Many congratulations! This child will grow up with a very happy tummy indeed. (:
Congratulations! I read A Homemade Life when I was pregnant with my second son, attracted to the title as inspiration for my growing family. You're going to have a wonderful time.
Congratulations, Molly!!
Congrats to Molly and Brandon! What fantastic news!
This post made my day, and we've never even met. Congratulations, and I will love following along on these pages!
Congratulations! Doubly excited for you, what with the new book as well.
Congratulations, Molly! What an exciting adventure you've just begun. A few friends of mine had a baby about six months ago and it has been such a joy watching them grow into their roles as parents. Such a marvellous experience :)
Congrats!! I am also expecting my first, due 8/28 :) Here we go...!
Congrats!! We became parents last year - it's the most amazing thing but also the hardest you'll ever do. It's amazing seeing our daughter try new foods - she had Bolognese sauce for the first time recently..... she loved it and her face really lit up when she tasted it.
Huzzah! What wonderful news! A baby!
We're just offering our baby his first purees, and his excitement and delight are just too wonderful. He moves the food around in his mouth and just really tastes it. It warms a foodie mother's heart.
Best wishes for a smooth pregnancy! :)
Yay! I'm 23 weeks into my first pregnancy, and I must tell you that your kim chi fried rice and the olive-oily granola are now required eating in our home. The appetite, it is in charge... congrats!
oh my goodness!!
that was the last thing i was expecting to read, but it was such a pleasant surprise!!
so, so very happy for you!!!
there is no doubt you will be a fantastic mother.
it's funny how a blog can make us all seem so close, like we really know you.
which i think makes us all the more excited.
congrats.
Congratulations!
Congratulations! Always good to bring little foodies into the world. :)
Congratulations!!! Much joy and health and prayers to you for a easy, healthy pregnancy, and a seamless transition to parenthood. Cheers! (That's sparkling grape juice in your glass :))
Congratulations! Long time reader first time commenter. The Sept 4th title peaked my interest today since that's my bday! It's so fun to have a Labor Day birthday. Best Wishes!
congratulations you two!!! so so so excited and happy for you both! xoxo
Like everthing you write, very well put. A big congratulations to you and your husband!
Molly! I don't think I've ever commented on your blog (though I've been reading it for years since college, and can honestly say that your blog is the reason I became brave enough to try to cook), but this is such exciting news, I can't help but say congratulations! All the best to you, Brandon, and the newest addition to your family!
How exciting! I am so happy for you. Enjoy the ride, as they say. Your life is about to become very different in a very nice way.
You will have the best-fed kid in town!
Oh how wonderful!! Congratulations!!
Congratulations! How wonderful!
Wow, congratulations! This kid's definitely going to grow up knowing what good food and good literature are. :)
Congratulations!
You brought tears to my eyes this morning. Congratulations! It's a wonderful journey - cherish every second. Mine are 24 and 21 and they will always be my babies.
Oh, congratulations! My daughter just turned five a few weeks ago and she is the most amazing little person, and getting to know her has been the best part of the ride. Teaching her how to cook and being able to share my kitchen with her is right up there, too. Accidentally overhearing her give a lecture on the differences
There was about a one week window of my life when I decided that being a parent might not be so bad, and thankfully my husband stepped up to the plate. Congrats again to both of you!
Oh Molly! Many heartfelt congratulations to you and Brandon. Very exciting news, this.
I'm almost 10 weeks pregnant, and call me crazy but I've been reading your blog expecting this announcement ever since last summer, when we started trying. I'm so happy to be pregnant at the same time some of my favorite bloggers are, you included.
I wish you all the best for your pregnancy, and... congratulations!!!
congratulations!!
Congratulations!!! wishing all 3 of you the absolute best.
My Noah is a September baby and I loved being pregnant in the summer! It's all flip-flops and sundresses. =)
Right now I'm 9 months pregnant and there's a blizzard happening outside. Not as much fun. =)
Congratulations Molly! I can't wait to hear about having a little one through your distinctive tone and wonderful writing. You're off to a fab start with the Jack Handy. Best wishes to you and Brandon and your pups!
Oh, I don't even know you, and here I am dripping tears all over my keyboard. So happy for you - I know you 3 will make such a lovely family.
And now everyone and their brother will tell you exactly what to do and how to do it right, but my only advice to you is to listen to your Mommy instincts. They always always know best.
It's funny, isn't it, how we can be so blase about the idea of wanting children (or becoming parents!). Until one day we wake up, turn to our significant others and say, "Huh. It's time, isn't it?". At least that's what happened to us, and so all of a sudden it's not just time, IT'S TIME. RIGHT NOW.
I wish you (and Brandon) endless happiness, joy and good health for your new journey, just as we begin trying for a little journey of our own somewhere on the other side of the world. :)
congratulations! so very happy for you. that will be one lucky little baby. :)
Happy days to you! Your Jack Handy thoughts made me laugh.
Congratulations!
Congrats, Molly! That's so exciting :)
Congrats!! How wonderful! I have 2 boys who are now 6 & 4 1/2. After my older son was born I felt nearly paralyzed because I saw everybody as somebody's baby. And in that postpartum haze that was both amazing to me and heartbreaking. It still occurs to me often. But it doesn't take my breath away. It justs reminds me to be more patient with all the people I come across.
I hope your adventure will be as wonderful as mine been. Best wished.
Oh my God! That is so exciting! Congratulations! Currently, you are the 4th person I know (have never met you, but I read your blog religiously and listen to your podcast)that is having a baby in September! How wonderful for you and Brandon. I wish you all the best with your pregnancy and look forward to learning about your little baby too. I am so very happy for you. :)
Is it weird that as soon as I saw you had updated I knew this was what the post was about? Creepy.
Congratulations - it is the best.
you're going to have so much fun! congratulations
Yeay!!! Congratulations Molly and Brandon!
Congratulations! Very excited for you two!
Congratulations! I was not much of a baby person either, but am now 25 weeks pregnant with our third. Welcome to the incredible journey that is parenthood!
Thanks for sharing the wonderful news! Congratulations! What an adventure you are in for.
I am waiting to give birth in the next little while and am celebrating your miracle with you from afar. It is truly an honour and gift!
Congratulations! That is fabulous news and I wish you all the best! How exciting!
My heart is smiling. Thanks for sharing your fantastic news. Congrats! Congrats!
Welcome to the club of parents...mothers in particular. Come on in the water is FINE. Family is a source of immeasurable joy and a noble challenge. May your lives be their happiest as you share, teach and grow together.
How wonderful Molly, congratulations!
Congratulations !!! Babies are the best! We are expecting our second baby in the end of august beginning of September !
Aha! Congratulations! Now we get to look forward to a new book and a new adventure from you.
I laughed a little while reading this - the bit about not being into babies. I was like that and now I write a blog called Mama May I. Go figure.
What surprised me most about motherhood - and still does - is that I'm good at it. Really, really good at it. I get the feeling you will be too.
Sending good wishes for a wonderful pregnancy your way.
Congratulations!!! That is wonderful news! Imagine how much fun it will be to introduce this little one to the wonders of food... . So excited for you!
Congratulations!!!
Molly and Brandon, congratulations!!!
Congratulations! You must let us know how it goes when you introduce the little one to pizza and chocolote malts, I bet that will be amazing :)
Welcome to the party! They say perspective is everything and yours is about to change drastically (actually sounds like it already has, but it'll keep going on that path). Huge congratulations and praise.
- Chad F.
Congratulations!!! What fantastic news! May this experience be truly wonderful for you & B in every way...
Congratulations, Molly! So happy for you! Motherhood is the best!
Congratulations! I'm due with my third son on July 17th, so it will be especially fun for me to read your pregnant-related posts! I had a hard time thinking or reading about food (let alone blogging about it) during the first couple months, but now that I'm in the 2nd trimester it's a lot easier. Good luck!
Congratulations, Molly! I've been following your blog for years and your announcement brought a little happy tear to my eye. So happy for you!!
awesome!! so many lovely things ahead. (and i can attest to the fact that introducing your children to bruce is a true joy.) congrats.
Molly,
What incredible news! How exciting that you and Luisa will be having your babes just a few months apart. And I have to say, as a fellow Virgo, that three under one roof will be interesting indeed! Motherhood is the most incredible and rewarding (and very challenging!) thing I've ever done. Getting to know my little boys has been more fun than I even expected. Currently, they're both into Lady Gaga and Adele and we have dance parties, often in the middle of breakfast (at 6:30am -- the neighbors love us, I'm sure!). You and Brandon are going to have a blast. I'm so happy for you. xo
Congratulation! That's such exciting news!
Yay!
Our twins are 1.5 years old, and it is pretty much the most awesome thing ever. Seattle is a great place to have kids. And once they're big enough to cook for, that opens a whole new wonderful world.
Also, a good chewy pizza crust is a perfect thing to gnaw on while teething. :)
Congratulations!! After being on a marathon listeing spree of SpilledMilk, I feel like I am sitting in the living room with you, or at least in the kitchen laughing with you and Matthew during a recording. Maybe this explains the chocolate-chocolate-broccoli episodes?!
Oh, Molly, congratulations!! So happy for you.
Wonderful! Enjoy that amazed wonder sticking around for quite some time... I just had my baby 4 months ago, and it is transforming. It feels like my baby and the experience around it is the center of THE universe, when really, she's just the center of my little family's universe. I find it hard to believe sometimes that everyone else isn't so entranced with her as I am. :-) Being a mother, there is nothing like it. Welcome.
I am a virgo and my two children are as well! I'm also expecting, due the week before you...so unless I get wacky and go early this time, I suppose there will soon be four virgos in my house. My poor, poor aires husband!
Congratulations!
Congrats - it really is the best!
woo hoooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
congrats congrats congrats! So excited for you! Hope morning sickness disappears and you feel wonderful wonderful!
Being a mama is magic. Srsly.
Oh, so much fun is in store for you! Congratulations.
How exciting! Congratulations on the little one. Your life will change in every way, but it will be worth it. :)
Congratulations :)
Being a new-ish parent myself (little one is 4), it already is going by so fast. While the feeding issues, sleeping issues, and whatever else you (or the baby) might have, might seem interminable in the moment, they do indeed go by in a blink. Looking at pictures from 3 years ago, I find myself thinking "was she ever really that small?" And you'll be amazed at how much time you spend just sitting and staring at a sleeping child.
All this leads up to is that I hope you enjoy every moment of this new adventure you're embarking on.
Congratulations! I'm 39 weeks along and just loved your last recipe for granola. I can't get enough whole grains and yogurt right now! Cheers to eating well with your little one in mind!
